Andrew Arreak
Principal Investigator, SmartICE Sea-ice Monitoring & Information Inc.
Andrew has been part of the SmartICE program since 2015, first as a community-based researcher with Memorial University and then as the Regional Operations Lead in Qikiqtaaluk North. He holds a Diploma in Environmental Technology from Nunavut Arctic College and has twice received the Arctic Inspiration Prize as a team member of Ikaarvik (2013) and SmartICE (2016). Motherboard (Vice) magazine named him Human of the Year in 2017 for helping Inuit and Arctic researchers work together. Andrew’s research on Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit of sea ice and safe ice travel in Mittimatalik has recently been published in the research journals Arctic Science, Frontiers in Climate, and Arctic. Andrew is a proud Inuk father of six and enjoys travelling on the land.
